Development in Seaton Valley
A potential wetland under threat
The lower reaches of Seaton Valley were once the largest wetland in the Māpua region, covered with kahikatea, other podocarps and flax. None of these species remain and the swampy pastures are grazed by cattle and pukeko. Fortunately this area has a great potential for reversion to its original condition.
If the proposed development of the flat and hill of 49 Stafford Drive proceeds as currently planned, it will destroy forever any potential for this wetland (see photos below) to be restored.
Flooding: Silting from earthworks for housing, combined with the storm water from houses on the hills plus Māpua sinking at 2.5mm/year AND sea level rising at 3.8mm/year will make flooding a real risk to properties adjacent to the development AND those downstream in Māpua town.
